Southeast Asia - region encompassing continental and island territories between Japan, China, India, and Australia. Includes the Indochina Peninsula and the Malay Archipelago; part of the Asia-Pacific region. Southeast Asia is bordered on the north by East Asia, on the west by South Asia and the Bay of Bengal, on the east by Oceania and the Pacific Ocean, and on the south by Australia and the Indian Ocean. Southeast Asia covers about 1,700,000 square miles (4,500,000 km2), which is 8% of Eurasia and 3% of the Earth's total land area. Its total population is more than 675 million, which is about 8.5% of the world's population.
Southeast Asia comprises 11 countries, with Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos predominantly on the continent, Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and East Timor, exclusively on islands, while the territory of Malaysia is divided into commensurate continental and island parts. Major and principal cities in Southeast Asia include Banda Aceh, Bandar Seri Begawan, Bangkok, Cebu City, Chiang Mai, Davao City, Denpasar, George Town, Hanoi, Hat Yai, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manado, Manila, Medan, Padang, Palembang, Pattaya, Puerto Princesa, Quezon City, Semarang, Surabaya, Udon Thani, Vientiane, and Zamboanga City.
The region is culturally and ethnically diverse, with hundreds of languages spoken by various ethnic groups. Ten countries in the region are members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
