East Asia is a geographic and cultural region of Asia, bordered by North Asia to the north, Southeast Asia to the south, South Asia to the southwest, and Central Asia to the west. To its east is the Pacific Ocean. The East Asia region includes the countries of China, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, and Taiwan. In addition, Hong Kong and Macau are two special administrative regions of China.
East Asia covers an area of approximately 4,570,000 square miles (11.840,000 square kilometers). The region has a population of more than 1.6 billion people, or 21.8%, or more than one-fifth of the world's total population.
Major and principal cities in East Asia include Beijing, Fukuoka, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Hiroshima, Kobe, Kyoto, Nagoya, Osaka, Pyongyang, Sapporo, Seoul, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Taipei, Tokyo, Ulaanbaatar, and Yokohama.
