South Asia is the southern region of Asia, defined both geographically and ethno-culturally. According to the UN classification, South Asia includes the following states: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. South Asia is bordered by East Asia to the northeast, Central Asia to the northwest, West Asia to the west, Southeast Asia to the east, and the Indian Ocean to the south.

South Asia has a total area of 2 million square miles (5.2 million square kilometers), which is 10% of the area of the Asian continent and 3% of the world's landmass. The population of South Asia is estimated at 2.04 billion, or about one-fourth of the world's population, making it both the most populous and most densely populated geographic region in the world.

Major and principal cities in South Asia include Agra, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Colombo, Delhi, Dhaka, Islamabad, Jaipur, Kabul, Karachi, Kathmandu, Kolkata, Lahore, Malé, Mumbai, Thimphu, and Varanasi.
