About Mallorca

Mallorca, the largest island in the Balearic archipelago, lies in the western Mediterranean Sea, part of Spain. Located approximately 170 kilometers east of the Iberian Peninsula, it borders other Balearic Islands such as Minorca to the northeast, Ibiza to the southwest, and Formentera to the south.

Palma, Mallorca's capital and also the island's largest city, is the administrative and cultural center of the island. With a population of over 400,000, Palma is home to key landmarks such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Palma (La Seu) and the Royal Palace of La Almudaina. These historic structures reflect a rich architectural heritage due to Roman, Moorish and Catalan influences.

Tourists frequent the Tramuntana mountain range, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for hiking, cycling, and scenic drives. This mountain range extends along the northern coastline and includes peaks such as Puig Major, standing at 1,445 meters.

The region around Sóller, nestled within the Tramuntana, offers a blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage, including the historic Ferrocarril de Sóller, a vintage train connecting Sóller to Palma. Valldemossa, another notable village within the Tramuntana, draws visitors to the Royal Charterhouse, where composer Frédéric Chopin and writer George Sand once resided.

Porto Cristo is a small coastal town on the east coast of Majorca, part of the municipality of Manacor. It is known for its natural harbor. The town's beach is characterized by fine sand and clear water, which attracts many visitors. The town has many restaurants and stores, increasing its appeal as a tourist destination. Porto Cristo retains cultural significance due to historical sites such as the Mare de Deu del Carme Church.

The Cuevas del Drach (Caves of Drach), located near Porto Cristo on Mallorca's east coast, extend for approximately 1,200 meters and have a maximum depth of 25 meters. Notably, it is home to Lake Martel, one of the world's largest underground lakes. Nowadays, there are guided tours dedicated to the geological formations of the caves and classical music is performed on the lake, which attracts many tourists every year.

In addition to natural attractions, Mallorca features numerous cultural and recreational sites. Bellver Castle, a Gothic-style fortress near Palma, provides panoramic views of the city and hosts a museum detailing the island's history. Formentor Peninsula, located in the island's far north, offers breathtaking coastal landscapes and a renowned luxury hotel, the Formentor, which has hosted numerous celebrities since its opening in 1929.

Agriculture also maintains relevance in Mallorca's economy, with almonds, olives, and viticulture playing key roles. Local wineries produce varieties such as Manto Negro and Prensal Blanc, contributing to the island's growing reputation in the wine industry.
