About Flores Island
Flores spans 5,996 square miles (15,531 square kilometers) and is part of the Lesser Sunda Islands. The island is famous for the Komodo National Park at its western end and the tri-colored Kelimutu volcanic lakes. Flores is predominantly Catholic, unlike most of Indonesia, due to Portuguese colonial influence. The island gained scientific significance after the discovery of Homo floresiensis fossils in 2003.
