About Yogyakarta
Yogyakarta (often called "Jogja") is a special administrative region and the only Indonesian city still ruled by a monarchy. The city serves as a center of classical Javanese fine arts and culture.
Home to the Kraton (Sultan's Palace) and the ancient Water Castle (Taman Sari), Yogyakarta maintains strong connections to Javanese traditions. The city is also the gateway to two of Indonesia's most important archaeological sites: Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist temple, and Prambanan, a massive Hindu temple complex.
The city is renowned for its traditional arts, including batik, wayang kulit (shadow puppetry), and gamelan music. Yogyakarta's Malioboro Street serves as the main shopping thoroughfare and is famous for its street food and traditional crafts.
