The region was originally inhabited by the Shinnecock and Montaukett peoples, both Algonquian-speaking nations. English settlers from Lynn, Massachusetts established Southampton in 1640, making it one of the first English settlements in the present-day state of New York. East Hampton was founded in 1648. For much of its early history, the economy of the Hamptons was based on agriculture, fishing, and whaling, with Sag Harbor emerging as a major whaling port in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The Hamptons consists of several communities, including Southampton, East Hampton, Bridgehampton, Water Mill, Sagaponack, Wainscott, Amagansett, Montauk, Sag Harbor, Westhampton, Westhampton Beach, Quogue, and Remsenburg. Sagaponack has been ranked among the most expensive ZIP codes in the United States.
Beginning in the late 19th century, the Hamptons developed as a summer resort destination, attracting artists, writers, and wealthy residents from New York City. The completion of the Long Island Rail Road extension to the area in 1870 facilitated this transformation. The region became associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement in the mid-20th century, with artists such as Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, and Willem de Kooning living and working in Springs and other parts of East Hampton. The Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center is preserved as a National Historic Landmark.
Today, the Hamptons is known for its beaches along the Atlantic Ocean, large estates, and high real estate values. The year-round population increases substantially during the summer season. Montauk, located at the easternmost point of the South Fork, is home to the Montauk Point Light, commissioned by President George Washington in 1792 and the oldest lighthouse in New York State.
