The hamlet is situated on a peninsula bordered by Gardiners Bay, Three Mile Harbor, and Accabonac Harbor. Its name is derived from the freshwater springs that feed into Pussy's Pond, a small body of water near the center of the community.
Springs was settled in the 17th century by English colonists and developed as a modest farming and fishing community. For much of its history, its residents, known as Bonackers, worked as baymen, harvesting shellfish, finfish, and seaweed from the surrounding waters. The term Bonacker, derived from Accabonac Harbor, is still used to describe longtime local families.
Beginning in the mid-20th century, Springs became notable as a center for American art. Painter Jackson Pollock and his wife, artist Lee Krasner, moved to Springs in 1945, purchasing a farmhouse on Fireplace Road. Their home and studio is now preserved as the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center, a National Historic Landmark. Other artists who lived or worked in the area include Willem de Kooning, Elaine de Kooning, and Saul Steinberg.
Local institutions include Springs School, a public elementary and middle school, and Ashawagh Hall, a community building used for art exhibitions and events. Green River Cemetery, located in the hamlet, is the burial site of Pollock, Krasner, and numerous other artists and writers.
