East Hampton is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and Gardiners Bay and Block Island Sound to the north. The town contains Montauk Point, the easternmost point of Long Island, where the Montauk Point Lighthouse, commissioned by President George Washington in 1792, is located.
Historically, the local economy relied on agriculture, fishing, and whaling. Beginning in the late 19th century, East Hampton became a destination for artists, writers, and summer visitors. Notable residents have included Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner, whose home and studio in Springs is now operated as a museum by Stony Brook University.
Today, East Hampton is widely known as part of the Hamptons, a group of seaside communities that serve as a summer resort area for residents of New York City. Tourism, real estate, and service industries form the basis of the modern economy.
