The area was originally inhabited by the Montaukett, an Algonquian-speaking Native American people, from whom the region takes its name. In 1660, the Montaukett sold large portions of the land to English settlers from East Hampton, who primarily used it as common grazing ground for cattle and sheep. For more than two centuries, Montauk remained largely undeveloped, functioning as a cattle ranch operated by a succession of proprietors.

In 1879, Arthur W. Benson, founder of the Brooklyn Gas Company, purchased most of Montauk at auction for $151,000. He commissioned the architectural firm McKim, Mead & White to design a group of seven shingle-style houses known as the Montauk Association, completed in 1883. The Long Island Rail Road extended service to Montauk in 1895, and the station remains the eastern terminus of the line.

In 1926, Miami Beach developer Carl G. Fisher purchased much of Montauk for approximately $2.5 million, intending to transform it into a "Miami Beach of the North." He constructed the seven-story Montauk Manor hotel, the Montauk Yacht Club, Montauk Downs golf course, and the Montauk Tower, a six-story office building that remains the tallest structure in the hamlet. Fisher's development plans collapsed following the 1929 stock market crash.

During World War II, Camp Hero was established as a coastal defense installation. The site later became a United States Air Force radar station, operational from 1951 to 1981, and is now preserved as Camp Hero State Park. The decommissioned AN/FPS-35 radar antenna on the site is a designated landmark.

Montauk Point Light, commissioned by President George Washington and completed in 1796, was the first lighthouse built in New York State and is the fourth-oldest active lighthouse in the United States. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2012.

Montauk's economy is based primarily on tourism and commercial fishing. Montauk Harbor at Lake Montauk is one of the largest commercial and recreational fishing ports on the East Coast of the United States, and the hamlet has been called the "Sport Fishing Capital of the World." The community contains six state parks: Montauk Point, Camp Hero, Montauk Downs, Hither Hills, Shadmoor, and Amsterdam Beach.

Montauk is served by New York State Route 27 (Montauk Highway), which terminates at Montauk Point. The area falls within the East Hampton Union Free School District and the Montauk School District.
