The area was first settled by European colonists in 1656, when Josiah Stanborough established a homestead near Sagg Pond. The community was originally known as Bull Head before being renamed Bridgehampton after a bridge was constructed across Sagg Pond in 1686.
Bridgehampton is served by the Bridgehampton Union Free School District, which operates a single K–12 school. The Long Island Rail Road's Montauk Branch provides passenger service to the hamlet at the Bridgehampton station, and New York State Route 27 (Montauk Highway) passes through the center of the community.
Historically an agricultural community centered on potato and dairy farming, Bridgehampton has become part of the resort area known as The Hamptons. Landmarks include the Bridgehampton Museum, the Hampton Library (founded in 1877), and the Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church. The hamlet was also the site of the Bridgehampton Race Circuit, a sports car racing track that operated from 1957 to 1999, and is now home to The Bridge, a private golf club built on the former track grounds.
