The town was settled in 1640 by English colonists from Lynn, Massachusetts, making it one of the oldest English settlements in the state of New York. According to the 2020 United States Census, the population of the town was 69,036.
Southampton covers a total area of approximately 295 square miles, of which about 140 square miles is land and the remainder is water. The town includes several incorporated villages, among them Southampton Village, Sagaponack, North Haven, Quogue, Westhampton Beach, and West Hampton Dunes. It also contains numerous hamlets such as Hampton Bays, Bridgehampton, Water Mill, Flanders, Noyack, and Tuckahoe.
The town is bordered by the Town of Brookhaven to the west, the Town of Riverhead to the northwest, the Town of East Hampton to the east, the Peconic Bays to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south.
Southampton is part of the region commonly referred to as the Hamptons, a popular summer resort area known for its beaches, historic estates, and seasonal tourism. The local economy is largely supported by tourism, real estate, agriculture, and commercial fishing. Stony Brook Southampton, a campus of Stony Brook University, is located within the town.
The Shinnecock Indian Nation, a federally recognized tribe since 2010, maintains a reservation within the town's boundaries near Shinnecock Hills.
