The area takes its name from the Shinnecock Indian Nation, a federally recognized tribe whose reservation is situated immediately to the east of the hamlet. Federal recognition was granted to the Shinnecock Nation in October 2010.

Shinnecock Hills is internationally known as the home of the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, founded in 1891. It is one of the five founding member clubs of the United States Golf Association (USGA), established in 1894. The club has hosted the U.S. Open on five occasions: 1896, 1986, 1995, 2004, and 2018.

The hamlet is also the site of the Stony Brook Southampton campus, formerly Southampton College of Long Island University, which operated from 1963 until 2005 before being acquired by Stony Brook University. The Shinnecock Hills station, served by the Long Island Rail Road's Montauk Branch, historically provided rail access to the area but is no longer in regular service.

Geographically, the hamlet is characterized by rolling glacial moraine terrain, a feature uncommon on Long Island, which has contributed to its development as a golf destination.
