As of the 2020 United States Census, the population of Water Mill was 2,506. The CDP covers an area of approximately 12.79 square miles, of which a notable portion consists of water, including Mecox Bay to the south.
The hamlet takes its name from a water-powered grist mill built in 1644 by Edward Howell, one of the original settlers of Southampton. The mill, now known as the Water Mill Museum, is among the oldest operating water mills in the United States and has been restored to demonstrate 17th-century milling techniques. For much of its history, Water Mill was an agricultural community centered on farming, dairying, and fishing.
Water Mill is served by the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road, which operates a station in the hamlet, and by New York State Route 27 (Montauk Highway), the main east–west roadway through the South Fork. Children in the area attend schools within the Southampton and Bridgehampton Union Free School Districts.
Landmarks in the hamlet include the Water Mill Museum, the Parrish Art Museum (located along Montauk Highway), and several preserved farmlands and windmills. Like much of the East End of Long Island, Water Mill has transitioned in recent decades from a predominantly rural community into a seasonal resort destination known for its beaches, estates, and vineyards.
