The area was originally inhabited by the Shinnecock people. The name "Sagaponack" is derived from an Algonquian word commonly translated as "land of the big ground nuts," referring to a type of tuber native to the region. European settlers, primarily of English origin, arrived in the mid-17th century, and the community developed as a farming settlement, a character it largely retained for centuries.
Sagaponack was incorporated as a village on September 2, 2005, separating from the hamlet of Bridgehampton. The incorporation was driven largely by residents seeking greater local control over zoning and development.
The village covers approximately 4.65 square miles and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south, Sagg Pond to the west, and agricultural land to the north. Sagaponack is known for its potato fields, ocean beaches, and historic architecture, including the Sagaponack School, a one-room schoolhouse that operated for many years as one of the smallest public schools in New York State.
Sagaponack has frequently been cited as one of the most expensive ZIP codes in the United States. It is part of the broader area known as The Hamptons, a popular summer destination, and has been home to numerous writers, artists, and business figures.
