The Balkans or Balkan Peninsula is a geographical area in southeastern Europe, bordered by the Adriatic Sea to the northwest, the Ionian Sea to the southwest, the Aegean Sea to the south, the Turkish straits to the east, and the Black Sea to the northeast. The northern border of the peninsula is considered to be a conventional line drawn from the mouth of the Danube, along the rivers Danube, Sava and Kupa (Kolpa).
