Scandinavia is a region of Northern Europe with close historical, cultural and linguistic ties between its constituent peoples. Most commonly, Scandinavia refers to Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Sometimes the name can also refer to the Scandinavian Peninsula (which does not include Denmark, but does include parts of northern Finland). Iceland and the Faroe Islands are sometimes included in Scandinavia because of their ethnolinguistic relationship with Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Although Finland is different from other Nordic countries in this respect, some authors call it Scandinavian because of economic and cultural similarities.
The languages of the Nordic countries - Swedish, Danish and Norwegian - are derived from a common Old Scandinavian language and belong to the northern branch of the Germanic language group of the Indo-European language family. In the north of Scandinavia (Sweden and Norway) there are speakers of Finnish and Sami languages, which belong to the Finno-Ugric group of the Uralic language family.
