Western Africa is the westernmost region of Africa, located southwest of central Sahara and bordered to the west and south by the Atlantic Ocean. The natural border to the east is the Cameroon Mountains. The United Nations defines West Africa as 16 countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo, as well as the islands of Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha. West Africa has an area of approximately 1,974,103 sq mi (5,112,903 sq km) and an estimated population of 419 million as of 2021.
Major and principal cities in Western Africa include Abidjan, Abuja, Accra, Bamako, Banjul, Bissau, Conakry, Dakar, Freetown, Lagos, Lomé, Monrovia, Niamey, Nouakchott, Ouagadougou, Porto-Novo, Praia, and Yamoussoukro.
