Southern Africa is the southernmost region of Africa. The definition is not universally accepted, but some groups include the United Nations Geoscheme, the intergovernmental Southern African Development Community, and the physical geography definition based on the physical characteristics of the land. Southern Africa is generally defined as Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Eswatini and South Africa are part of the Southern African Customs Union.
The climate of the region is broadly divided into subtropical in the north and temperate in the south, and also includes humid-subtropical, Mediterranean, mountain-subtropical, oceanic, desert and semi-arid regions. With the exception of the lower parts of Zambia and the interior of Namibia and Botswana, the region rarely suffers from extreme heat. The Namib Desert is the driest area in the region.
Major and principal cities in Southern Africa include Antananarivo, Cape Town, Gaborone, Harare, Johannesburg, Kinshasa, Lilongwe, Lusaka, Maputo, Maseru, Mbabane, Pretoria, and Windhoek.
