Northern Africa is a region covering the northern part of the African continent with an area of approximately 3,85 million sq miles (10 million sq km). Most of the region is located in the Sahara Desert. There is no universally accepted definition of the region, and it is sometimes defined as extending from the Atlantic shores of Western Sahara in the west to the Red Sea coasts of Egypt and Sudan in the east.
The most common definition of the region's borders includes Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, and Western Sahara, a territory disputed between Morocco and the partially recognized Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. It can also include Malta, as well as other Italian, Portuguese and Spanish regions such as Lampedusa and Lampione, Madeira and the Canary Islands, which are closer or as close to the African continent as to Europe. The UN definition includes all of these countries as well as Sudan. The African Union defines the region similarly, differing from the UN only in that it excludes Sudan. The Sahel, south of the Sahara Desert, can be considered the southern border of North Africa.
Major and principal cities in Northern Africa include Algiers, Cairo, Khartoum, Rabat, Tripoli.
