Central Africa or Middle Africa is a region of the African continent that includes the following countries: Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Republic of the Congo, and Sao Tome and Principe. The UN Office for Central Africa also includes Burundi and Rwanda in the region, which are considered part of East Africa in the geoscheme. These eleven countries are members of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS). Six of these countries (Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Republic of Congo) are also members of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) and share a common currency, the CFA franc of Central Africa.
Sub-equatorial Africa, especially the Congo Basin, is characterized by the densest network of full-flowing rivers in Africa, the largest of which is the Congo River (Zaire). The Ogowe, Kwanza and other rivers also flow into the Gulf of Guinea. Huge areas are occupied by swamps. In the equatorial climate belt there are dense tiered humid tropical forests.
Major and principal cities in Central Africa include Bangui, Brazzaville, Bujumbura, Gitega, Kigali, Kinshasa, Libreville, Luanda, Malabo, N'Djamena, Yaoundé, and São Tomé.
