About Santa Lucía
Santa Lucía is a municipality located in the Francisco Morazán Department of Honduras, situated approximately 22 kilometers northeast of Tegucigalpa, the national capital.
The Facts:| Department: | Francisco Morazán |
| Population: | ~ 16,000 |
| Density: | 510/sq mi (200/sq km) |
| Area: | 25 sq mi (65 sq km) |
| Coordinates: | 14°06'58.6"N 87°06'48.3"W |
The town lies in the mountainous terrain of central Honduras at an elevation of roughly 1,400 meters above sea level. This altitude gives Santa Lucía a mild and temperate climate, noticeably cooler than Tegucigalpa, which sits at a lower elevation.
Santa Lucía was established during the Spanish colonial period and retains much of its historical character. The town is particularly recognized for its narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings with red tile roofs, and a well-preserved colonial urban layout centered around a main plaza. The colonial Catholic church of Santa Lucía, which overlooks the central square, is considered the town's most prominent architectural landmark and one of the oldest religious structures in the department.
The municipality is a popular destination for domestic tourism, frequently visited as a day trip from Tegucigalpa. It is often included in the same tourist circuit as the nearby town of Valle de Ángeles.
The local economy is supported in part by small-scale agriculture, handicrafts, and tourism-related commerce. The surrounding hillsides are characterized by pine and oak forest typical of the Honduran highlands. The municipality forms part of the mountainous corridor that stretches across the central region of Francisco Morazán, an area historically significant to both the colonial and post-independence development of Honduras.
