The city was founded on June 27, 1536, by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Alvarado.
San Pedro Sula serves as the primary industrial and economic center of Honduras, often referred to as the "Industrial Capital of the Country." The city generates a substantial share of Honduras's GDP and hosts a large concentration of manufacturing facilities, particularly in the textile and apparel sectors operating within free-trade zones known as maquiladoras. Other significant industries include food processing, beverages, and petrochemical production. The presence of these industries has historically attracted both domestic and foreign investment, making the city a critical node in Central American trade and commerce.
The metropolitan population of San Pedro Sula exceeds 1.5 million people, making its urban agglomeration one of the largest in Central America.
The city is served by Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport (IATA: SAP), located approximately 15 kilometers southeast of the city center. The airport provides connections to major cities in North America and within Central America, functioning as an important regional air transport hub.
San Pedro Sula has a tropical monsoon climate (Köppen classification Am), characterized by high temperatures throughout the year and a pronounced wet season from May to November. Average annual temperatures range between 26 °C and 30 °C. The city is situated in a valley surrounded by mountains, which influences local weather patterns.
In the early 2010s, San Pedro Sula recorded some of the highest homicide rates of any city in the world, peaking at approximately 169 homicides per 100,000 residents in 2013. In subsequent years, the rate declined significantly due to a combination of law enforcement measures and social programs, though the city has continued to face significant security challenges linked to organized crime and gang activity.
The city's main football club is Real España, one of the most successful clubs in Honduran football history.
