About Omoa
Omoa is a municipality located in the Cortés Department of northwestern Honduras, situated along the Caribbean coastline of the Gulf of Honduras. It lies close to the border with Guatemala and is part of the broader Sula Valley region.

The area was inhabited by indigenous peoples before Spanish colonization. During the colonial period, the Bay of Omoa served as a strategic maritime point for Spanish trade and military operations along the Caribbean coast of Central America.
The most significant historical landmark of the town is the Fortaleza de San Fernando de Omoa, a Spanish colonial fortress whose construction began in 1759 under orders of the Spanish Crown during the reign of King Ferdinand VI. The fort was built primarily to defend the coast against attacks by British forces and pirates who frequently targeted Spanish colonial shipping in the region. It is considered one of the largest Spanish military fortifications ever constructed in Central America. In 1779, British forces briefly captured the fortress before it was retaken by Spanish troops. Today the fort operates as a museum and is designated a national monument of Honduras.
The local economy relies on fishing, small-scale agriculture, and tourism. The beach at Omoa attracts both domestic and international visitors.
Omoa has a tropical climate with high humidity and temperatures that remain warm throughout the year, consistent with the Caribbean lowlands of Honduras.
