Isla del Tigre is a volcanic island. Its highest point, Cerro El Tigre, reaches approximately 760 meters above sea level.
Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Amapala served as Honduras's principal Pacific port, playing a significant role in the country's foreign trade and maritime commerce. In 1847, it was officially declared a free port, which further stimulated its economic activity and attracted merchants from Central America and beyond. The port's strategic position in the Gulf of Fonseca made it a key transit point for goods moving along the Pacific coast of the region.
The port function was later transferred to Puerto de San Lorenzo on the mainland, causing a significant decline in Amapala's commercial importance.
Access to the island is provided by boat from the mainland town of Coyolito. Today, Amapala is primarily oriented toward tourism, drawing visitors with its beaches, fishing, and relatively isolated character. The town retains a colonial-era Catholic church and several historical buildings that reflect its former prominence as a port settlement.
