About Coxen Hole

Coxen Hole is the capital and largest settlement of Roatán, the biggest of the Bay Islands of Honduras. It is located on the southwestern coast of the island and serves as the administrative center of both the Roatán municipality and the Bay Islands Department (Departamento de Islas de la Bahía).

The Facts:
Department: Bay Islands
Island: Roatán
Population: ~ 8,500
Coordinates: 16.323°N 86.537°W

The town takes its name from John Coxen, an English buccaneer who operated in the Caribbean during the late 17th century and is believed to have used the natural harbor as a base of operations.

Coxen Hole functions as the primary commercial and governmental hub of the Bay Islands. The town contains the main market, government offices, banks, and a variety of shops serving both residents and visitors. The Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport, located on the western end of Roatán immediately adjacent to Coxen Hole, provides air connections to the Honduran mainland and international destinations. A ferry terminal in the town offers regular passenger service to La Ceiba on the Caribbean coast of mainland Honduras.

Spanish is the official language, though English and an English-based Creole are widely spoken among the local population, reflecting the islands' prolonged period under British influence before Roatán was formally ceded to Honduras by the Bay Islands Treaty of 1859.

The town has a relatively modest physical infrastructure compared to the more tourist-oriented areas of Roatán, such as West End and West Bay. Most of the island's tourism development is concentrated elsewhere, while Coxen Hole retains a primarily local commercial character.

The Bay Islands Department is the smallest department in Honduras by land area. Coxen Hole, as its de facto capital, hosts the departmental government offices and represents the political and economic core of the archipelago.
