About Utila
Utila is a small island located in the Caribbean Sea, belonging to the Bay Islands Department (Islas de la Bahía) of Honduras. It is one of three main islands in the department, alongside Roatán and Guanaja. The island lies approximately 29 kilometres north of La Ceiba on the Honduran mainland.

The island covers an area of roughly 45 square kilometres. Its terrain is relatively flat compared to neighbouring Roatán, with much of the interior consisting of swampland and mangrove forest. The highest elevation on the island does not exceed 75 metres.
The main settlement, known as Utila Town, serves as the administrative and commercial centre of the island. The population of Utila is estimated at around 5,000 people. Residents are predominantly of mixed descent, including descendants of English-speaking settlers who arrived in the 19th century, as well as later Spanish-speaking Honduran migrants. English, specifically a local Caribbean creole variety, has historically been the dominant language, though Spanish is widely spoken today.
The Bay Islands were inhabited by indigenous peoples long before European contact. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the islands served as a base for pirates and privateers operating in the Caribbean. Britain maintained influence over the Bay Islands for much of the 19th century before ceding them to Honduras under the Treaty of 1859.
Utila is situated within the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second-largest coral reef system in the world. This makes the surrounding waters exceptionally rich in marine biodiversity. The island is particularly known for frequent sightings of whale sharks (Rhincodon typus), which aggregate in the waters near Utila throughout much of the year.
Tourism is the primary driver of the local economy. Utila has developed a reputation as one of the most affordable destinations in the world to obtain a PADI scuba diving certification, which attracts a large number of budget travellers annually. Fishing remains a secondary economic activity.
The island is served by Utila Airport (IATA: UII), which operates domestic flights connecting it to La Ceiba. Regular ferry services also link Utila to the mainland.
