About Coron Island
Coron Island, distinct from Coron Town on Busuanga, encompasses 27 square miles (71 square kilometers) and is renowned for its dramatic limestone cliffs and crystal-clear lagoons. The island is ancestral domain of the indigenous Tagbanua people, who maintain traditional rights over the area. Its most famous attractions include the Twin Lagoons, Kayangan Lake (often called the cleanest lake in Asia), and Barracuda Lake, known for its unique thermoclines.
The surrounding waters feature numerous World War II shipwrecks, making it one of the world's premier wreck diving destinations. The Japanese vessels were sunk during the Battle of Coron Bay in September 1944. The island's strict preservation policies have helped maintain its pristine condition, though this also means certain areas are restricted to visitors without proper permits from the Tagbanua community.
