About Cebu Island

Cebu is a significant island province in the Central Visayas, covering an area of 1,909 square miles (4,944 square kilometers). The island played a pivotal role in Philippine history as the site of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan's arrival in 1521 and the subsequent establishment of Spanish colonial rule. The Cebu Metropolitan Area, centered around Cebu City, is the country's second-largest metropolitan area after Manila, serving as a major economic hub for the central Philippines.

The island's economy is diverse, encompassing industrial manufacturing, technology services, and tourism. Cebu is home to the country's largest shipping industry and hosts numerous business process outsourcing companies. The historic Magellan's Cross, planted in 1521, and the annual Sinulog Festival celebrating the Santo Niño (Holy Child Jesus) attract millions of visitors.

Tourism infrastructure is well-developed, particularly in Mactan Island, connected to Cebu by two bridges. The surrounding waters offer world-class diving opportunities, including thresher shark watching at Malapascua Island and sardine runs at Moalboal. The island's mountainous interior provides opportunities for hiking and canyoneering, especially in the southern region near Kawasan Falls.
