About Atlanta Atlanta Airport

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (IATA: ATL, ICAO: KATL) is the primary international airport serving Atlanta, Georgia, and the surrounding metropolitan area. Located approximately 10 miles south of downtown Atlanta, the airport has been the world's busiest airport by passenger traffic since 1998 and by number of landings and take-offs since 2005.

The airport was originally established in 1926 as Candler Field, named after former Atlanta mayor Asa Griggs Candler. It was renamed Atlanta Municipal Airport in 1942, then Atlanta Airport in 1956. The facility received its current name in 1971 to honor former Atlanta mayors William B. Hartsfield and Maynard Jackson, who played crucial roles in the airport's development and expansion.

Delta Air Lines operates its largest hub at Hartsfield-Jackson, with the airline accounting for approximately 75% of the airport's passenger traffic. The airport also serves as a focus city for several other carriers and handles both domestic and international flights to destinations across six continents.

The airport spans 4,700 acres and features five parallel runways, making it one of the most efficient airports in the world for aircraft operations. The terminal complex consists of a main domestic terminal and an international terminal, connected by the automated Plane Train system. Seven concourses (A through F, plus concourse T) provide 195 gates total. Each concourse is accessible via the underground train system, which transports passengers between terminals and concourses.

Annual passenger traffic at Hartsfield-Jackson consistently exceeds 100 million travelers, with the airport handling over 110 million passengers in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic. The facility processes more than 2,700 arrivals and departures daily during peak periods.

Economic impact of the airport extends far beyond aviation, contributing over $34 billion annually to Georgia's economy and supporting approximately 63,000 on-site jobs. The airport serves as a critical logistics hub, handling significant cargo operations alongside passenger services.

Recent infrastructure improvements include terminal renovations, runway reconstructions, and the ongoing expansion of international facilities. The airport's strategic location and extensive route network have established it as a primary gateway for travelers entering the southeastern United States and a major connecting point for transcontinental and international flights.
