About Atlanta
Atlanta is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Georgia. With a population of approximately 520,000 within the city limits and over 6.4 million in the metropolitan area, it serves as the cultural and economic center of the Atlanta metropolitan area, home to more than six million people and the ninth-largest metropolitan statistical area in the United States.
The city was established in 1837 at the intersection of two railroad lines, and was originally named Terminus due to its role as the end of the Western and Atlantic railroad line. It was later renamed Marthasville after the daughter of the state governor, and finally became Atlanta in 1845. The name is derived from the Western and Atlantic Railroad's local depot, suggesting the feminine form of Atlantic.
Atlanta played a crucial role during the American Civil War as a major Confederate supply depot. The city was largely destroyed during General William T. Sherman's March to the Sea in 1864 but was rapidly rebuilt during the Reconstruction era. This rebuilding earned Atlanta its nickname "Phoenix City," as it rose from the ashes of war.
The city is home to several major corporations, including The Coca-Cola Company, Delta Air Lines, Home Depot, and UPS. Atlanta's economy is diverse, with significant sectors including logistics, professional and business services, media operations, and information technology. The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has been the world's busiest airport by passenger traffic since 1998.
Notable attractions include the Georgia Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums in the world, the World of Coca-Cola, and the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park preserves several sites related to the civil rights leader's life and legacy. Piedmont Park serves as the city's premier green space, hosting numerous festivals and events throughout the year.
Atlanta is known as a major center for music, particularly in hip-hop, and has been dubbed "the Hollywood of the South" due to its booming film and television production industry. The city hosted the 1996 Summer Olympics, which led to significant urban development and infrastructure improvements that continue to benefit the metropolitan area today.
