About Saint Kitts and Nevis
Saint Kitts and Nevis constitutes a sovereign island country located in the West Indies, part of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. The federation comprises two islands: Saint Kitts (formally Saint Christopher) and Nevis, separated by a 2-mile (3.2 km) channel. The country covers an area of 101 square miles (261 square kilometers), making it the smallest sovereign state in the Western Hemisphere. The islands of Saint Barthélemy, Saint Martin, Saba, Sint Eustatius, and Anguilla are situated to the north-northwest. Antigua and Barbuda lie to the east and northeast, while Montserrat and the uninhabited island of Redonda (which belongs to Antigua and Barbuda) are located to the southeast.
The capital city, Basseterre, sits on Saint Kitts, while Charlestown serves as Nevis's main town. The population numbers approximately 54,338 (2023 census), with about 75% residing on Saint Kitts.
Both islands feature volcanic origins, with Mount Liamuiga on Saint Kitts reaching 3,792 feet (1,156 meters) and Nevis Peak rising to 3,232 feet (985 meters). The climate remains tropical year-round, with temperatures averaging between 75-85°F (24-29°C).
The economy relies primarily on tourism, agriculture, and offshore financial services. Sugar production, once the primary industry, ended in 2005. The country maintains strong ties with the United States and uses the Eastern Caribbean dollar as its currency.
Tourism drives significant economic activity, with cruise ships regularly docking at Port Zante in Basseterre. Major attractions include Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Romney Manor with its centuries-old botanical gardens, and the scenic narrow-gauge St. Kitts Scenic Railway, which circles the island. Nevis features historic plantation inns, pristine beaches, and thermal hot springs.
The federation gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1983 but remains part of the Commonwealth, with the British monarch as head of state. The country operates as a federal parliamentary democracy with a unicameral legislature. English serves as the official language, and the literacy rate exceeds 98%.
