About Nevis Island

Nevis is a small Caribbean island that forms part of the sovereign state of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Located in the Leeward Islands chain of the West Indies, it has an area of 36 square miles (93 square kilometers). The island's capital is Charlestown, which serves as the main commercial and government center.

The island is dominated by Nevis Peak, a potentially active volcano reaching 3,232 feet (985 meters) above sea level. The peak is often shrouded in clouds and creates its own microclimate. The island's name comes from the Spanish "Nuestra Señora de las Nieves," meaning "Our Lady of the Snows," because the cloud cover around the peak reminded Christopher Columbus of snow.

Historically significant, Nevis was the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, one of America's Founding Fathers. The Alexander Hamilton Museum, housed in a restored building where Hamilton was born, stands as a testament to this connection. The island was also once home to British Admiral Horatio Nelson, who married Frances Nisbet on Nevis at Montpelier Plantation in 1787.

The economy primarily relies on tourism, offshore banking, and agriculture. The island is known for its pristine beaches, including Pinney's Beach and Oualie Beach. Several historical plantation houses have been converted into luxury hotels, including the Four Seasons Resort and Nisbet Plantation Beach Club, the Caribbean's only historic plantation inn located on a beach. The island maintains a population of approximately 11,000 people and has a warm, tropical climate year-round.
