About Somalia

Somalia, officially the Federal Republic of Somalia, is a country located in the Horn of Africa. It borders Ethiopia to the west, Djibouti to the northwest, the Gulf of Aden to the north, the Indian Ocean to the east, and Kenya to the southwest.

The country has a total area of 637,657 square kilometers, making it Africa's easternmost country. Somalia has the longest coastline on Africa's mainland, stretching for over 3,025 kilometers. The capital and largest city is Mogadishu, which serves as the seat of the federal government.

The history of Somalia dates back thousands of years. During the Middle Ages, several powerful Somali empires dominated the regional trade, including the Ajuran Empire and the Sultanate of the Geledi. In the late 19th century, the area came under British and Italian colonial rule, leading to the establishment of British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland. Somalia gained independence in 1960 when the two territories merged to form the Somali Republic.

Somalia's economy is primarily based on livestock, remittances, and telecommunications. The country is known for having significant untapped reserves of various natural resources, including uranium, iron ore, and natural gas. Despite these resources, Somalia remains one of the world's poorest and most fragile states, largely due to decades of civil war and political instability.

The population of Somalia is estimated at around 18 million people. The official languages are Somali and Arabic, while Islam is the state religion, with nearly 99% of the population being Muslim. The Somali people share a common language, culture, and Islamic heritage, which has helped maintain their distinct cultural identity despite political divisions.

In recent decades, Somalia has faced numerous challenges, including civil war, drought, and famine. The country has been working towards stability and reconstruction since the establishment of the Federal Government of Somalia in 2012. International organizations and partner countries continue to support Somalia's efforts to build peace, strengthen government institutions, and develop its economy.
