About Road Town
Road Town is the capital and largest city of the British Virgin Islands, situated on the island of Tortola. The city serves as the territory's primary port and commercial center, located on the southern shore of Tortola in the horseshoe-shaped Road Harbour.
The population of Road Town is approximately 12,000 inhabitants (2012 estimate). The city is the main hub for the territory's financial services industry, which, alongside tourism, forms the backbone of the British Virgin Islands' economy.
Road Town's port facilities handle numerous cruise ships throughout the year and serve as a major base for yacht chartering in the Caribbean. The J.R. O'Neal Botanic Gardens, established in 1979, and the Virgin Islands Folk Museum are notable cultural attractions within the city.
The city's infrastructure includes the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (formerly known as Beef Island Airport) located approximately 11 kilometers from the town center. Road Town's architecture combines modern commercial buildings with historic colonial structures, including the Old Government House Museum, which dates back to 1924.
The city experiences a tropical climate with average temperatures ranging between 25°C and 32°C (77°F to 90°F) throughout the year. Road Town serves as the primary administrative center, hosting the territory's government offices, including the House of Assembly and the Governor's Office, representing the British Crown.
