About Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport
Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (Turkish: Sabiha Gökçen Uluslararası Havalimanı, IATA: SAW, ICAO: LTFJ) is an international airport located on the Asian side of Istanbul, Turkey. Situated in the Pendik district, approximately 35 kilometers southeast of Istanbul's city center, the airport opened on January 8, 2001. It is named after Sabiha Gökçen, the world's first female fighter pilot and the adopted daughter of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey.
The airport serves as Istanbul's secondary international gateway and operates as a hub for Pegasus Airlines, Turkey's largest low-cost carrier. It also serves as a focus city for Turkish Airlines and handles both domestic and international flights to destinations across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
Sabiha Gökçen Airport features a single terminal building with a capacity of approximately 41 million passengers annually. The facility underwent significant expansion in 2009 with the opening of the international terminal, which increased its operational capacity and enhanced passenger services. The airport operates with a single runway measuring 3,000 meters in length.
The airport offers various ground transportation options, including bus services operated by Havabus connecting to different parts of Istanbul, metro connections via the M4 line to Kadıköy, and taxi services. Car rental facilities and parking areas are also available for passenger convenience.
As of recent years, the airport handles over 35 million passengers annually, making it one of Turkey's busiest airports. The facility includes retail shops, restaurants, duty-free stores, and business lounges to serve passenger needs during transit and waiting periods.
