About Istanbul Airport
Istanbul Airport (Turkish: İstanbul Havalimanı, IATA: IST, ICAO: LTFM) is the main international airport serving Istanbul, Turkey. Located in the Arnavutköy district on the European side of Istanbul, approximately 35 kilometers northwest of the city center, the airport opened on October 29, 2018. It replaced Atatürk Airport as Istanbul's primary aviation hub and serves as the main hub for Turkish Airlines, the national flag carrier of Turkey.
The airport was constructed as part of Turkey's ambitious infrastructure development program and represents one of the largest airport projects in the world. The facility is designed to handle up to 90 million passengers annually in its initial phase, with plans for expansion to accommodate 200 million passengers upon completion of all phases, which would make it the world's largest airport by passenger capacity.
Istanbul Airport features a single terminal building spanning 1.4 million square meters, making it one of the largest terminal buildings globally. The airport currently operates with two parallel runways, with plans for a total of six runways in the final configuration.
The airport's strategic location positions it as a major transfer hub connecting Europe, Asia, and Africa. It offers flights to over 300 destinations worldwide, served by more than 100 airlines. The facility includes extensive retail and dining options, with over 400 shops and restaurants, as well as premium lounges and business facilities.
Transportation to and from the airport is provided through various means, including metro connections via the M11 line, bus services, taxis, and private transfers. The airport also features on-site parking facilities and car rental services for passenger convenience.
