About Ourense
Ourense is a city located in the autonomous community of Galicia, in northwestern Spain. Situated in the province of the same name, the city serves as the provincial capital and is positioned along the Miño River. With a population of approximately 105,000 inhabitants in the urban area, Ourense ranks as the third-largest city in Galicia, after Vigo and A Coruña.
The city's history dates back to Roman times when it was known as Aquae Urentes, meaning "burning waters," a reference to its famous thermal springs. These natural hot springs, with temperatures reaching up to 65°C (149°F), have been utilized for therapeutic purposes for over two millennia and remain one of the city's most distinctive features.
Ourense's economy is primarily based on services, commerce, and administration, given its role as a provincial capital. The city also maintains some industrial activity, particularly in the textile and food processing sectors. Agriculture in the surrounding region contributes to the local economy, with wine production being particularly notable in the nearby Ribeiro wine region.
The city's architectural heritage reflects its long history. The Cathedral of Ourense, built between the 12th and 13th centuries, represents one of the finest examples of Romanesque and Gothic architecture in Galicia. The Roman Bridge, originally constructed in the 1st century AD and later rebuilt in the 13th century, spans the Miño River and connects the old town with newer districts. Other significant landmarks include the Episcopal Palace, the Church of Santa Eufemia, and the Claustro de San Francisco.
The thermal springs remain central to the city's identity and tourism appeal. The Termas de Outariz and Chavasqueira are popular free public thermal pools located along the Miño River, attracting both locals and visitors year-round.
Transportation infrastructure includes rail connections to major Spanish cities through the high-speed rail network, with regular services to Madrid and other destinations. The city is also connected by highway to other Galician cities and Portugal. Ourense's geographic position makes it an important transportation hub within the region, facilitating both domestic and cross-border commerce with northern Portugal.
