About Slovakia

Slovakia (officially the Slovak Republic) is a landlocked country in Central Europe. Bordered by five countries: Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, Hungary to the south, Austria to the southwest, and the Czech Republic to the northwest.

The country has a population of approximately 5.4 million people, with its capital and largest city being Bratislava. The official language is Slovak, which belongs to the West Slavic language group. The country covers an area of 49,035 square kilometers (18,933 sq mi).

Slovakia became an independent state in 1993 following the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia, known as the "Velvet Divorce." The country joined NATO and the European Union in 2004, and adopted the euro as its currency in 2009, becoming part of the Eurozone.

The landscape is notable for its mountainous nature, with the Carpathian Mountains extending throughout the northern half of the country. The High Tatras, located in northern Slovakia, form the highest mountain range in the Carpathian Mountains. The country's highest point is Gerlachovský štít at 2,655 meters above sea level.

Slovakia's economy is based on a diverse industrial sector, including automotive manufacturing, electronics, and mechanical engineering. The country is the world's largest per-capita car producer, with automotive factories from Volkswagen, Peugeot-Citroën, Kia, and Jaguar Land Rover. Tourism also plays a significant role in the economy, with visitors attracted to its medieval castles, folk architecture, caves, and ski resorts.

The country has a rich cultural heritage influenced by its various historical rulers and neighbors. Slovak folk traditions, including music, dance, and crafts, remain an important part of the national identity. The country is home to numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the historic town of Banská Štiavnica, Spiš Castle, and the wooden churches of the Carpathian Mountain area.
