Slovakia, officially the Slovak Republic, is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It shares borders with five countries: Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, Hungary to the south, Austria to the southwest, and the Czech Republic to the northwest. The capital and largest city is Bratislava, strategically located on the Danube River.

Administratively, Slovakia is divided into 8 self-governing regions (kraje): Bratislava, Trnava, Trenčín, Nitra, Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Prešov, and Košice. These regions are further subdivided into 79 districts (okresy).

The country's political system operates as a parliamentary democratic republic, with the President serving as the head of state and the Prime Minister as the head of government. The National Council of the Slovak Republic is the country's unicameral parliament, consisting of 150 members elected for four-year terms.

Slovakia became an independent state on January 1, 1993, following the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia, known as the "Velvet Divorce." The country joined both NATO and the European Union in 2004, and became part of the Schengen Area in 2007. Slovakia adopted the euro as its currency in 2009, becoming part of the Eurozone.

The western region of the country is characterized by the Little Carpathian mountains and the fertile Danube lowlands, while the central and northern regions feature the Carpathian Mountains, including the High Tatras. The eastern part of Slovakia contains important industrial centers and varied topography.
