About Margarita Island

Margarita Island (Spanish: Isla de Margarita) is the largest island in the Venezuelan state of Nueva Esparta, situated in the Caribbean Sea, approximately 40 kilometers north of the mainland. The island covers an area of 1,020 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 500,000 inhabitants.

The island was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1498 during his third voyage to the Americas. It became known for its pearl industry in the colonial period, which attracted Spanish settlers and pirates alike. The island played a significant role in Venezuela's independence movement in the early 19th century.

Margarita Island consists of two peninsulas connected by an isthmus and features diverse landscapes, including mountains, mangroves, and beaches. The highest point is San Juan Mountain (Cerro San Juan) at 920 meters above sea level. The island experiences a semi-arid climate with average temperatures ranging from 24°C to 37°C (75°F to 99°F).

The island's economy is primarily based on tourism, fishing, and trade. It benefits from its status as a duty-free port, established in 1974, which attracts visitors for shopping. Porlamar, the largest city, serves as the main commercial center and hosts numerous hotels, restaurants, and shopping centers.

Notable infrastructure includes the Santiago Mariño Caribbean International Airport, which connects the island to various international destinations. The island features two national parks: Laguna de La Restinga National Park and Cerro El Copey National Park.
