About Los Roques Archipelago
Los Roques Archipelago (Spanish: Archipiélago Los Roques) is a federal dependency of Venezuela located in the Caribbean Sea, approximately 168 kilometers north of Caracas. The archipelago consists of 350 islands, cays, and islets covering an area of approximately 41 square kilometers (16 sq mi) of land and 225,153 hectares of protected waters.
In 1972, the archipelago was declared a National Park (Parque Nacional Los Roques) to protect its unique marine ecosystem and coral reefs. The park encompasses diverse marine habitats, including coral reefs, mangrove swamps, and seagrass beds, making it the largest marine park in the Caribbean Sea.
The main island, Gran Roque, is the only inhabited island in the archipelago and serves as its capital. It hosts approximately 1,500 permanent residents and features the archipelago's airport, posada-style accommodations, and basic services. The island's lighthouse, built in 1870, remains an iconic landmark.
Los Roques is renowned for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and rich marine biodiversity. The archipelago supports over 280 species of fish, numerous coral species, and serves as a crucial nesting site for various seabirds. The waters around the islands are popular for activities such as diving, windsurfing, and sport fishing.
The climate is arid with an average temperature of 27.3°C (81.1°F). The archipelago receives limited rainfall, averaging 250mm annually. Access to Los Roques is primarily through small aircraft from Caracas, with flights landing at Gran Roque Airport. Tourism is strictly regulated to preserve the ecosystem, with visitors required to obtain permits and follow environmental guidelines.
