About Coro
Coro, officially Santa Ana de Coro, is the capital of Falcón State and one of Venezuela's oldest cities, founded in 1527. The city and its port, La Vela de Coro, were designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1993 due to their unique architecture and historical significance.
The historical center of Coro contains over 600 historical buildings, combining Dutch architectural influences with local traditions and techniques. The city features extensive examples of earthen architecture, including buildings made of mud, wood, and cane.
Notable landmarks include the Cathedral of Santa Ana, constructed in the 17th century, and the Casa de las Ventanas de Hierro (House of the Iron Windows), which exemplifies colonial architecture. The nearby Médanos de Coro National Park features extensive sand dunes, creating a desert-like landscape.
The city's economy is primarily based on tourism, services, and light industry. Coro serves as an important educational center with several universities and technical institutes. The climate is semi-arid, with low rainfall and relatively high temperatures throughout the year.
