About Seattle Streetcar

The Seattle Streetcar is a modern streetcar system operating in Seattle, Washington. The system consists of two separate lines: the South Lake Union line and the First Hill line. The South Lake Union line, also known as the South Lake Union Streetcar or SLU Streetcar, opened on December 12, 2007. This line runs from downtown Seattle through the South Lake Union neighborhood to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

The First Hill line, officially known as the First Hill Streetcar, opened on January 23, 2016. This line connects the Capitol Hill Link light rail station to Pioneer Square via First Hill and the International District. The line was created in part to compensate for the absence of a Link light rail station on First Hill. Both streetcar lines are operated by King County Metro under contract with the Seattle Department of Transportation.

The streetcar system uses low-floor modern streetcar vehicles manufactured by Czech company Avia. Vehicles feature accessibility features including wheelchair ramps and priority seating. Fare payment uses the ORCA card system consistent with other regional transit services. The two lines currently operate as separate systems without a direct connection, though plans have been proposed to connect them via the Center City Connector, a project that has faced delays and budget challenges.
