About King County Metro Transit System
King County Metro Transit, commonly known as King County Metro or Metro, is the public transit system serving King County, Washington. The agency operates bus services throughout the county, with the majority of routes serving Seattle and its surrounding communities. Metro is a division of the King County Department of Transportation.
The system operates over 200 bus routes with a fleet of approximately 1,500 buses. Service includes local routes, express routes, RapidRide bus rapid transit lines, and specialized services. Metro's service area covers approximately 2,134 square miles and serves a population of over 2 million residents. The system provides both peak and off-peak service, with frequency varying by route and time of day.
RapidRide is Metro's bus rapid transit service featuring enhanced stations, off-board fare payment, real-time arrival information, and more frequent service. As of 2023, the system operates seven RapidRide lines designated by letters: A, B, C, D, E, F, and H. These lines feature distinct red buses and branded stations with improved amenities.
Metro operates a fare structure based on zones and time of travel, though the two-zone system was eliminated in March 2018 in favor of a flat fare. The agency accepts ORCA cards, a regional smart card payment system used across multiple transit agencies in the Puget Sound region. Reduced fares are available for youth, seniors, and passengers with disabilities.
The agency maintains several transit centers and park-and-ride facilities throughout King County. Major transit hubs include the University District, Northgate, Bellevue Transit Center, and Burien Transit Center. Metro also operates electric trolleybus routes in Seattle using overhead wires for power.
