About Newark Liberty International Airport
Newark Liberty International Airport (IATA: EWR, ICAO: KEWR) is a major international airport serving the New York metropolitan area, located in Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey. Originally opened in 1928 as Newark Metropolitan Airport, it was the first major airport to serve the New York City area and was renamed Newark Liberty International Airport in 2002 to honor victims of the September 11 attacks.
The airport covers approximately 2,027 acres and operates three runways: 4L/22R (11,000 feet), 4R/22L (10,000 feet), and 11/29 (6,800 feet). Newark Liberty features three passenger terminals designated as Terminal A, Terminal B, and Terminal C, connected by the AirTrain Newark monorail system that also provides connections to Amtrak and New Jersey Transit rail services at Newark Liberty International Airport Station.
United Airlines maintains its largest hub at Newark Liberty, with the airport serving as a primary gateway for transatlantic flights to Europe and flights to Asia and Latin America.
In 2019, Newark Liberty handled over 46 million passengers, making it the 11th busiest airport in the United States. The airport serves more than 50 airlines operating flights to over 150 destinations worldwide. Major carriers include United Airlines, which occupies Terminal C, along with American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, and numerous international carriers.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey owns and operates the airport. Recent infrastructure improvements include the ongoing Terminal A redevelopment project, which began construction in 2018 and represents a $2.7 billion investment to modernize facilities and enhance passenger experience. The airport's strategic location, approximately 8 miles southwest of Midtown Manhattan, makes it a crucial component of the New York area's aviation infrastructure.
