About LaGuardia Airport
Newark Liberty International Airport (IATA: EWR, ICAO: KEWR) is a major international airport located in Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey, approximately 15 miles southwest of Midtown Manhattan. Originally opened in 1928 as Newark Metropolitan Airport, it was the first major airport to serve the New York metropolitan area and was renamed Newark Liberty International Airport in 2002 to honor victims of the September 11 attacks.
The airport serves as a primary hub for United Airlines and features three passenger terminals designated as Terminal A, Terminal B, and Terminal C. Terminal C, which opened in 1988, is the largest and newest facility. The airport operates four runways, with the longest measuring 11,000 feet.
Newark Liberty handled approximately 46 million passengers in 2019, making it the 11th busiest airport in the United States. It offers direct flights to over 50 international destinations across six continents.
Transportation options include the AirTrain Newark monorail system, which connects all terminals to Newark Liberty International Airport Station, providing access to NJ Transit and Amtrak services. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey owns and operates the facility.
The airport spans 2,027 acres and employs over 24,000 people, contributing significantly to the regional economy.
