About LaGuardia Airport
LaGuardia Airport (IATA: LGA, ICAO: KLGA) is a public airport located in the northern part of Queens, New York City. Named after former New York City mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, the airport opened in 1939 and serves as one of the three major airports in the New York metropolitan area, alongside John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport.
The airport covers approximately 680 acres and operates four runways, with the longest measuring 7,001 feet. LaGuardia primarily handles domestic flights within the United States, though it also accommodates some flights to Canada and limited international destinations. The facility is owned by the City of New York and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
LaGuardia consists of three terminals: Terminal A, Terminal B, and Terminal C. The airport has undergone significant renovation and reconstruction as part of a multi-billion dollar modernization project that began in 2016. This comprehensive redevelopment includes new terminal buildings, improved transportation connections, and enhanced passenger amenities.
In 2023, LaGuardia handled approximately 31 million passengers, making it one of the busiest airports in the United States. Major airlines operating at LaGuardia include American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, and United Airlines. The airport serves as a hub for Delta Air Lines and a focus city for American Airlines.
Transportation to and from LaGuardia includes buses, taxis, ride-sharing services, and the AirTrain LaGuardia, which connects to the subway system. The airport's proximity to Manhattan, located approximately 8 miles from Midtown, makes it a popular choice for business travelers.
