About Chicago
Chicago is the third-most populous city in the United States and the most populous city in the state of Illinois. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan in the Midwest, Chicago serves as a major economic and cultural hub for the region. The city has a population of approximately 2.7 million people within the city limits, while the greater Chicago metropolitan area, known as Chicagoland, is home to nearly 10 million residents, making it the third-largest metropolitan area in the United States.

The city was incorporated in 1837 and experienced rapid growth following the Great Fire of 1871, which destroyed much of the downtown area but led to extensive rebuilding efforts. This reconstruction period established the city as a center of architectural innovation, giving rise to the Chicago School of architecture and the world's first skyscrapers.
Chicago's economy is highly diversified, with major industries including finance, technology, manufacturing, food processing, and transportation. The city hosts the headquarters of numerous Fortune 500 companies and serves as a major transportation hub, with two international airports: O'Hare International Airport and Midway International Airport. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Chicago Board of Trade are among the world's largest derivatives markets.
The city is renowned for its distinctive architecture and numerous landmarks. The Willis Tower, formerly known as the Sears Tower, was the world's tallest building from 1973 to 1998. Millennium Park features the iconic Cloud Gate sculpture, while Grant Park hosts major festivals and events. The Art Institute of Chicago houses one of the world's finest collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art.
Chicago's cultural contributions are significant, particularly in music, with the city being the birthplace of electric blues and house music. The city has a thriving theater scene, anchored by institutions like the Goodman Theatre and Steppenwolf Theatre Company.
The city is divided into 77 distinct neighborhoods, each with its own character and history. Major sports teams include the Chicago Bulls (NBA), Chicago Bears (NFL), Chicago Blackhawks (NHL), Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox (MLB). The University of Chicago and Northwestern University are among the prestigious higher education institutions in the metropolitan area.
Chicago experiences a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. The city's nickname "The Windy City" refers to its political rhetoric rather than actual wind conditions, though lake-effect winds from Lake Michigan do influence the local weather patterns throughout the year.
