About Chicago O'Hare International Airport
Chicago O'Hare International Airport (IATA: ORD, ICAO: KORD) is a major international airport located 17 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, Illinois. Named after naval aviator Edward "Butch" O'Hare, the airport serves as a primary hub for United Airlines and American Airlines.
O'Hare consistently ranks among the world's busiest airports by passenger traffic and aircraft operations. In 2024, the airport handled approximately 80 million passengers, making it the fourth-busiest airport in the United States. The facility operates four passenger terminals (Terminals 1, 2, 3, and 5) connected by the Airport Transit System, an automated people mover.
The airport features eight runways and covers 7,627 acres. Terminal 5 serves as the international terminal, while Terminals 1-3 primarily handle domestic flights.
O'Hare underwent significant expansion with the completion of Terminal 5's extension in 2009 and continues modernization efforts through the O'Hare 21 program. This $8.5 billion initiative includes terminal renovations, new gates, and improved ground transportation facilities. The airport provides direct flights to over 200 destinations worldwide and employs approximately 63,000 people, making it one of Chicago's largest employers.
Ground transportation options include the Chicago Transit Authority's Blue Line, taxis, rideshare services, and rental cars.
